Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Ohana chiropractors use specific low force techniques to help balance your body so you feel better during your pregnancy journey.

Lying on your stomach

We use specifically designed pregnancy pillows  to cater for your comfort and size at all stages of your pregnancy – so your baby won’t be squashed when you lay on your tummy! Our ‘mums to be’ love having a chance to lay on their tummies, even if for a short while.

Chiropractic treatment may help with:

  • Pelvic girdle pain

  • Pubic symphysis dysfunction and pain

  • Back pain – upper,  middle or lower back

  • Sacro-iliac joint dysfunction

  • Neck tension

  • Headaches

  • Sleep problems

Physical changes during pregnancy

There are many hormonal and physical changes you’ll experience during your pregnancy journey. On a physical level, rapid growth of the baby and changes in hormones (relaxin) can loosen the ligaments of the pelvis, create postural changes, and potentially turn small imbalances into more significant problems. These will have an impact on your posture and comfort. (see picture)

It’s hardly any wonder that 50-70% of woman can experience back pain at some stage of their pregnancy (1). Even though back pain is common in pregnancy it is not normal and treatment options are available. A review of the literature shows that chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy can be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms that affect pregnant patients (2)

Ohana practitioners utilise a holistic approach aiming to relieve pregnancy related discomfort where possible. We have a strong focus on balancing and strengthening the function of the pelvis and spine.

We stock a range of pelvic belts which may assist in helping stabilise the Sacroiliac joints during everyday activities, and our practitioners are able to provide lifestyle advice for optimal sitting and standing, safe exercises as well as other ergonomic advice. We understand an integrated team approach is often necessary to ensure you get the best possible support during pregnancy and as such we enjoy co working with other health care practitioners and have a wonderful referral list we can utilise if necessary.

It is one of our greatest joy’s to be a part of your amazing pregnancy journey. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.
