We get it! You most likely have a few questions before you make your first appointment with a chiropractor. Perhaps they’re things that you have heard on the grapevine, a rumour. Maybe you once saw a chiropractor a few years ago and are questioning if all chiropractors are created equal (spoiler alert: they’re not). Can chiropractic help me with a problem not related to my spine?

Chiropractic care is very well known for how it can help people with spinal related problems, such as lower back pain, and also neck pain and headaches. These are conditions that are well researched in the literature, and we see great results with people who have these conditions on a very consistent basis.

Interestingly, when people are having their adjustments, they often report to us that other parts of the health seem to improve as well. They say that they see improvements in sleep, digestion, immune system function and energy levels, just to name a few. Another comment that people often make is that they generally feel less stressed and that they can handle the ups and downs of life a whole lot better. Although we don’t have specific research to back this up, these are positive changes that people tell us about all the time.

At Ohana, we take a thorough history and do a comprehensive examination to determine whether or not you are in the right place (back pain, or otherwise), and if you’re not – we will find someone who will be able to help you.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

There are a small number of chiropractic clinics that still use gowns, but we aren’t one of them! All of your clothes can stay on. We do suggest that you wear loose fitting comfortable clothing when you visit us so you can move around as easily as possible.

Will you crack my back?

At Ohana we use a variety of different adjusting techniques. A big part of our focus is on using low force techniques including blocks for under the hips, or using a hand-held adjusting tool (called the ‘Activator’). Sometimes we might use a drop piece adjustment, and sometimes when indicated we will perform a manual adjustment. But we definitely do not ‘crack’ you!

How long will it be before I start to feel better?

This is a common question people have when they first start coming in. We like to focus on two different outcomes, firstly on the person starting to feel an improvement in symptoms, but secondly (and just as if not more importantly), them reaching complete resolution of the problem that brought them in.

Everyone is different, and your rate of healing will depend on lots of things including how long the problem has been there, your lifestyle, your stress levels, your sleep, your nutrition amongst other things. This is why we take a thorough history and do a comprehensive exam, as well as tailor a care plan for you that is specific to your situation.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Sometimes people report that they feel a little sore after their adjustment, a bit like if they had been to the gym for the first time in a while and their body was getting used to working in a different way. We always recommend that people go for a short walk after their appointment, and also to drink lots of water. This helps the body integrate after the adjustment. Most of the time this feeling of slight soreness afterwards only lasts for a short number of visits at the start as the body learns to adapt and change with having regular adjustments.

Why do I need an initial consult and then a care plan visit?

It’s really important that we have enough time first of all to meet you and understand what your health goals are, as well as get a clear picture as to what is bringing you in to see us. We take a very thorough and detailed history so that we know exactly what has been going on for you. The next step is a comprehensive examination, to find out what is happening in your body. What we then do is take all that information and prepare a care plan tailored specifically for you so that we can work together for you to achieve your health goals. These two visits are the foundation to which we work from when you come in for your adjustments. They provide us with all of the detail and information required to give you the best results possible.

Do I need x-rays to come in?

In this clinic you do not need to have any scans including x-rays to come and see us. If you have had previous imaging you are more than welcome to bring those results in. If the chiropractors feel that a more up-to-date imaging is required, they will refer you out to a radiographic centre to get this done. X-rays taken at these centres are in a digital form (which means they have a low dose of radiation), and they’re covered by Medicare which means you will not be out of pocket.

At what age can someone start getting chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is safe for people of all ages, even newborn babies. Chiropractic care for infants looks a lot different to adults. It takes extra training and study to be able to assess and adjust babies, and the techniques are altered to make them very safe, gentle and specific. In fact, there was a study released in 2019 by Safer Care Victoria that investigated the safety of chiropractic care for children under 12. They found that in Australia there has never been a serious adverse event reported in the literature or in insurance claims involving the care of a child by a Chiropractor. The evidence of harm is low because Chiropractors modify their techniques to suit the age and developmental stage of the child.

Why do people generally visit a chiropractor for the first time?

Whilst a lot of people use chiropractic to help maintain and improve movement and function at different stages throughout life, most people initially seek our help because they are in some sort of pain (often headache, neck pain or lower back pain).

It’s also not uncommon for us to find that they have come in AFTER they’ve tried a number of other interventions. If you have any concerns about chiropractic care please chat to the team. We will be able to help ease your mind… and save you a whole heap of money in the process.

 

Is it okay to exercise after I have been adjusted?

 
First of all – MOST of the time we will always recommend a short walk after your visit to help the body settle in and integrate the adjustment.
 
It’s not always a great idea to do something super strenuous (like a big long run or a heavy gym session) straight after your adjustment as it takes the focus away from healing. This is particularly true if you are in the first few weeks to months of care.
 
For people who come in for general maintenance or wellness care, it’s usually okay to go and exercise afterwards depending on what showed up during the adjustment.
 
So basically, the answer to this really depends on individual circumstances and it is best to just ask at the end of the adjustment if it’s a good idea or not!
